After Southport the route crosses the rich agricultural farmland reclaimed from the floodplains of the Ribble and the Douglas. There is very little of the marshes and bogs left, unlike with the Humber. Martin Mere just about survives as a wetland but there is not much else. The Sustrans route found some quiet backroads where the rush of the main roads seemed far away. This track is an example.
