Barbican Waters

One Photo A Week 9 - Barbican Waters. London. I love the way waters can vary so much in texture and state. When two different waters are side by side then the contrast can make for a good image.
I also love the casual geometry that a photo can create. Height and angle can give geometrical form to the most unlikely places. To order a print please contact me.

Reed Pool

I liked this pool, which was on the Pocklington Canal when I walked there last week. Something about the contrast between the gentle reeds and the potential bottomless doom of the pool.

Buddies

Layla has a mate on the moor; Juno is a bit older but just as mad. Her owner's are great. We just meet up and let them fly around for half an hour.

Fern

After the winter the fern by the front door looked perhaps terminally knackered. I know they die back each year but I thought it could be the last rites. Well, come the summer and it is revived to more health than ever before. It is a lovely thing to brush past each time you go in the door.

Wild Flowers 101

I know nothing about wild flowers, but I knew this was a bit different when I saw it on Strensall Common. A check with my sister (who does know about plants) confirmed it is a Common Spotted Orchid.

Cleaning Service

Back from a sweaty bike ride, Layla climbs onto the table in the garden (not really allowed) and relieves me of salt from my neck.

Blue Tit

A Blue Tit enjoying a bath in the garden.
Danielle has bought a paddling pool ... for the dog. Photos to follow when the heatwave begins.

Photo of the Week 8

Taken in 2019 at the Findhorn Community in north east Scotland. One of the good things about running this Photo a Week slot is that I can show photos I would not normally exhibit, but which I like people to see. This is one of those shots; ostensibly a pretty normal shot of a coastline, the multi-coloured lumps of heather gave the image an ambiguity of scale, distance and colour.

Lead

This church is all that is left of the village of Lead that used to be here. It is near Towton where the bloodiest battle in British history was fought in 1461. It has a suitably sombre feel to it.

The Roof

Last view of the house for a while. This is the up on the roof looking back at the extension. We had lavender plants up here, but the lack of water and the wind saw them off, so now we have succulents that seem really happy. Low maintenance, interesting to observe, perfect!

Garden News

The fox gloves are looking good this year. 100% self seeded.

Roof Garden

When we lived in Grimsargh near Preston (until I was six or seven) my father grew marrows (as they were then called in England) on the garage roof. We never saw them, I just remember him climbing up there to water them each day. After last year's disappointing crop of courgettes in the garden I decided to follow suit and stick a grow bag on the roof for courgettes and squash. Despite the cold and wind they are doing pretty well so far.

Scholes

I visited Scholes this side of Leeds, researching the book. Spotted this natural tunnel.

Black Lives Matter

We went to a socially distanced black lives matter demo Sunday morning. A silent vigil for 16 minutes in York. A good turnout, sombre but moving.

Hedgehog

Seeing a hedgehog in the daytime is a bit of a shock. I managed to keep the dog away. I am always amazed by how fast they move, not slow moving animals at all.

The Dog in the Forest

I liked how the sun just about caught Layla in Bishop Wood last week.

In Living Colour

My mother would often say "the garden is very nice, but I do like a bit of colour" which was quite a severe criticism coming from her. Neither Danielle nor I are particularly big on flowers, preferring things you can eat. So when these clematis (which I planted when we moved in) flower each year it reminds me of my mother and I hope she likes the colour.

Elderflowers

The more I walk in these wonderful woods, the more it seems to me they must have inspired cathedral builders of long ago. The sense of space and geometry is amazing in both.
Meantime I have made some elderflower cordial for the first time in a good few years. I first made it when I was in Oxford 40 years ago. This time I showed a neighbour's young children how it is done, and hopefully they'll get the chance to make some.

Hair Salon

Danielle's hairdressing skills were pushed to new limits this week. The result was mighty impressive to me. Nice to have the kitchen back though.

Dog walking

Rowan took Layla a walk with a friend and her 9 month old Labrador. Had a good time splashing in the Ouse.
