I was brought up in Penwortham, Preston. An unremarkable place in name and character; this photo is of Penwortham Hill from our garden. I do remember looking at the roadsign for this road - the A49 I think - and seeing "Liverpool to Hull" written on it. This seemed a romantic and long route.So it was a surprise to find this link http://www.lep.co.uk/weirdnews/Lancashire-town-compared-to-Beirut.5828757.jp comparing Penwortham with Beirut. Times move on.
